Synthesis of phenylacetic acid by carbonylation
The carbonylation of benzyl alcohol to phenylacetic acid and its derivatives in the presence of rhodium catalysts is reported in this work. The influence of different reaction conditions, such as total reaction pressure, hydrogen partial pressure, catalyst, promoter and reactant concentrations, as well as reaction temperature on the catalytic activity and selectivity has been investigated. The activation parameters of the carbonylation have been measured and a possible mechanism of the reaction has been proposed.
