A simple, convenient and general method has been developed for the synthesis of alpha-aminonitriles by a one-pot three component condensation of aldehydes, amines and trimethyl silyl cyanide in acetonitrile in the presence of a catalytic amount of La(NO3)(3)(.)6H(2)O or GdCl(3)(.)6H(2)O.
