Determination of dust-dispersion-induced turbulence and its influence on dust explosions
In this work, the propogation laws of turbulent free jets are used to characterize the critical condition under which turbulence is induced during the process of dust dispersion by means of air discharge from a pressurized dust reservoir. It is shown that the turbulence intensity is dominated by an equivalent exit velocity of the air discharge at the discharge nozzle and an equivalent nozzle diameter. With the help of a developed theoretical model, these two dominant parameters can be evaluated from pressure-time histories measured inside the reservoir and at the nozzle. It is then possible to estimate the intensity of turbulence induced by dust dispersion from the results of turbulence measurements in air flows without dust loading. In this way, the influence of dust-dispersion-induced turbulence on the rate of flame propogation of dust explosions can be quantitatively described.
