Growth of high quality 4in diameter Li2B4O7 single crystals
We report the progress in the growth of Li2B4O7 Single crystals to a size of 4 in in diameter and 8 in in length. Crystal growth has been carried out by both conventional and modified Bridgman methods. Steady state growth has been found to be very important to grow crystals without the presence of voids near the conical part. Three in diameter crystals grown by the modified Bridgman method have been characterized by X-ray topography and chemical etching. The nature and origin of dislocations have been studied. Finally, crystals 4 in in diameter and 8 in in length have been grown successfully. These crystals have been found to be of good optical quality with no macroscopic defects such as voids and cracks. The wafers cut from these crystals were characterized by X-ray topography, chemical etching and surface acoustic wave velocity measurements.
