BIOMATERIALS HIGHLIGHTS .9. BIOACTIVE CERAMICS
Materials with active bone-bonding ability have found applications in medicine for coatings of, for example, load-bearing dental or orthopedic implants. These bioactive materials, which are based on calcium-phosphate-containing glasses of glass ceramics or Ca-phosphate-ceramics, have the problem however that they do not perform well under shear loading. The various materials employed and the factors which affect their performance are discussed.
