Core-shell microgels - crosslinked nanosized spherical particles with a surface composition that is chemical different to that of the core are reviewed here. Cores with special optical properties, obtained by, e.g., labeling with organic dye molecules or noble metal clusters (see Figure), are focused upon. These particles are useful as optical tracer systems for diffusion measurements.
