Advanced Materials has come a long way since its modest beginning in 1989 as a "piggy back" journal in Angewandte Chemie. Some of its more recent achievements as well as innovations to foster the further development of the journal are presented in this Editorial. The ways in which the success of a journal can be measured in terms of quality and popularity are also discussed.
