The latest developments in the transition metal catalyzed, i.e. metathesis-based, synthesis of monolithic supports as well as their most recent applications are summarized. The general principles of the manufacture of such media are outlined and discussed. Special consideration will be given to new possibilities of functionalization. For purposes of comparison and in order to outline the advantages of this new state of the art in radical polymerization-based synthesis of such media will additionally be provided and discussed with regard to the new metathesis-based technology.
