Fabrication alumina fibers reinforced alumina matrix composites using monazite as interface
Alumina/alumina composite using LaPO4 coated fibers was fabricated by hot-pressing. The influence of the coating, sintering temperature, pressure and fiber volume fraction on the mechanical properties of the composites was investigated. The results indicated that the bulk density and maximum fracture strength of the composites using coated fibers is higher than that of the composite using non-coated fibers. Meanwhile, the ductility of the composites is improved by fiber coating. The maximum fracture strength, bulk density and the ductility of the composites are increased by increasing of the fiber volume fraction under the present applied hot-pressing condition. SEM observation showed that the coated fiber debonded from matrix even in the dense composite.
