Measuring the Redox Density-of-States with a Scanning Tunneling Microscope - A Theoretical Investigation
The redox density of states of a redox couple is discussed within the framework of quantum mechanical theories of electron transfer reactions. It may exhibit oscillations if the energy of reorganization of the outer sphere is smaller than that of the inner sphere. Using a large bias potential it should be possible to measure the redox density of states of immobilized reactants with a scanning tunneling microscope.
