Electrode kinetic studies of beta-carotene in aprotic solvents with carbon fiber microelectrodes
The electrode kinetics of p-carotene have been studied in aprotic media at carbon fiber microelectrodes. These electrodes and the used methodology have proved adequate to perform voltammetric measurements and kinetic studies without the need of complementary sophisticated instrumentation. The electrooxidation of a-carotene was found to depend on the type or characteristics of aprotic solvent. In inert solvents, the electrooxidation process involves a rapid (quasi-reversible) heterogeneous charge transfer, whereas in non-inert solvents the initial charge transfer is affected by a coupled chemical reaction.
