Effect of cell width on segmented-in-series SOFCs
Segmented-in-series solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) arrays typically feature cell widths greater than or equal to1 cm. We consider here the advantages and disadvantages of decreasing the cell width to 1 - 2 mm. The calculation results indicate that electrode resistance losses can be minimized via reduced widths, even for relatively thin electrodes. Initial results are presented for screen printed arrays, with 1-2 mm wide individual cells, on porous partially stabilized zirconia supports. The cells consisted of Ni-YSZ anodes, YSZ electrolytes, and La0.6Sr0.4Fe0.8Co0.2O3-based cathodes. Au or Pt interconnects were used for this initial demonstration.
