Synthesis and electrochemical properties of Li0.44MnO2 as a novel 4 V cathode material
Li0.44Mn1- yTiyO2 (0 < y < 0.55) with Na0.44MnO2-type tunnel structure were prepared from the Na-analogs via ion exchange in molten LiNO3/LiCl at 280-330 degrees C. Chemical analysis indicated the Na/Li ratios in Li0.44Mn1- yTiyO2 were less than 0.004. The electrochemical measurements for the Li/Li0.44MnO2 cell showed a novel high potential plateau region at around 4.3 V on both charge and discharge with an average discharge voltage of 3.57 V, and an initial discharge capacity of 166 mAh/g between 2.5 and 4.8 V. The 4 V plateau was observed in all Li/Li(0.44)Mn(1- y)TiyO(2) cells with different Ti contents. The maximum discharge capacity (179 mAh/g) was observed in the Li/Li0.44Mn0.89Ti0.11O2 cell.
