Synthesis of Biocompatible CS-g-CMS Ion Exchangers and Their Adsorption Behavior for Heavy Metal Ions

This paper describes how some new chitosan-g-carboxymethylcellulose (CS-g-CMC) copolymers can effectively remove heavy metal ions under a variety of conditions. These CS-g-CMC copolymers, which were synthesized by thermal polymerization, have considerable potential for use as biocompatible ion exchangers. We studied the effects of several parameters on the adsorption capacity on CS-g-CMC, including the amount of CS and CMC, the reaction temperature, the concentration of the initial solution, and the adsorption time. In addition, the structure of the CS-g-CMS copolymer was investigated by FTIR spectroscopy. As a result, the CS-g-CMC ion exchangers showed high adsorption selectivity for heavy metals in low-concentration solutions.
