Determination of the PULSTAR reactor neutron energy spectrum
Multiple activation foils have been employed to calculate thermal, epithermal and fast specific saturation activities of the neutron energy spectrum of the 1 MW PULSTAR research reactor at North Carolina State University. The research reactor has various facilities that can be used for experiments. This characterization was performed in the pneumatic transfer radiation facility. NaI(TI) well type detectors along with appropriate electronics were used to evaluate the activities of the irradiated foils. Various parameters such as peak efficiencies, cadmium ratios, saturation activities and specific activities were determined using 2 x 2 and 3 x 3 NaI(TI) crystals. The SAND II (neutron fluence rate spectrum determination by multiple activation) [McElroy et al. A computer automated iterative method for neutron flux spectra determination by foil activation, Vols I, II and IV (1967)] code was utilized to unfold the experimental data. The spectrum unfolded from these experimental measurements was best approximated by a trial spectrum obtained from the reference library of SAND II.
