Enhanced anthocyanin methylation by growth limitation in strawberry suspension culture
The effect of the 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) concentration on cell growth, anthocyanin production, and anthocyanin composition was investigated in cell suspensions of strawberry (Fragaria ananassa cv. Shikinari). Lower 2,4-D concentrations in the medium limited the cell growth and enhanced both anthocyanin production and anthocyanin methylation. The ratio of peoinidin-3-glucoside to total anthocyanin significantly increased under the lower 2,4-D conditions. Cell growth limitation Ir as one of the factors enhancing the anthocyanin methylation.
