Silicon colloids: From microcavities to photonic sponges
Silicon colloids with diameters from 0.5 mu m to 5 mu m are synthesized. Because of their spherical shape and smooth surface they work as optical microcavities with well-defined resonating modes in the near-infrared range. Silicon colloids are also the building blocks of photonic sponges formed by disorder networks of microspheres of different sizes that scatter light strongly in a wide range of wavelengths.
