Lanthanide beta-diketonate complexes are found to exhibit a smectic A and a nematic phase over a broad temperature range. Polarized luminescence is observed for the europium(III) complex dissolved in the nematic liquid-crystal mixture E7 and for the aligned vitrified mesophase.
