Photoluminescent Properties of Eu2+-Doped Alkaline-Earth Chlorosilicate Phosphors for LED-Based Solid-State Lighting
Investigation was performed on luminescent properties of some Eu2+-doped alkaline-earth chlorosilicate phosphors for excitation by near-UV or blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs). A two-step firing process is available to increase the photoluminescence (PL) intensity of the chlorosilicates. For example, Ca8Mg (SiO4)(4)Cl-2:0.2Eu(2+) shows efficient green emission at 509 nm and is about 2.8 times higher than a commercial (Y,Gd)(3)(Al,Ga)(5)O-12:Ce3+ (YAG) in PL peak intensity under 450 nm light excitation. Moreover, the chlorosilicates show less thermal quenching than the reference YAG in PL integrated intensity. These results imply that some Eu2+-doped alkaline-earth chlorosilicates are promising candidates as phosphors for near-UV and blue LEDs. (C) 2009 The Electrochemical Society.
