Evidence for the Role of Ions in Aerosol Nucleation
Aerosol nucleation has been studied experimentally in purified, atmospheric air, containing trace amounts of water vapor, ozone, and sulfur dioxide. The results are compared with model calculations. It is found that an increase in ionization by a factor of 10 increases the production rate of stable clusters by a factor of similar to 3, probably due to ion-induced nucleation.
