This paper investigates the utility of reduced-equation methods(1,2,3,4) for performing flash calculations in compositional reservoir simulations. Only the IMPES formulation is considered. We find that the reduced-equation methods offer no significant improvement over methods already used(5,6), which work well for reservoir simulation where the flash must be closely coupled with the solution of the pressure equation and where a good initial guess is generally available.
