EFFECT OF CHLORIDE-IONS ON THE ELECTROCHEMICAL-BEHAVIOR OF MILD-STEEL IN SULFURIC-ACID
Corrosion behaviour of low carbon steel in different concentrations (0.01-6M) of deaerated H2SO4 has been studied by potentiodynamic polarisation measurements at a scan rate of 120 mV min(-1). It is found that passivation current, corrosion potential and polarisation resistance decreases with increase in acid concentration, while passive potential, critical current, corrosion current and corrosion rate increases. However, the corrosion behaviour is not altered much above a concentration of 0.3 M. It is established that the corrosion rate depends on the concentration of sulphuric acid and chloride ions along with sweep rate of polarisation.
