A programme of catalyst preparation for the synthesis of 2-methylpyrazine by various methods is described. Three routes of the synthesis have been tested in standard conditions over catalyst samples prepared in laboratory and commercially available ones with and without promoters. Cyclization of ethylenediamine with propylene glycol to obtain 2-methylpyrazine is found to be the commercially useful route in comparison with several other routes described.
