Magnetic field effect on electron transfer reactions of acridine yellow with amines of varied structures in homogeneous medium
Interaction of acridine yellow (AY) with three amines, viz., dimethylaniline (DMA), 4,4'-bis(dimethylamino) diphenylmethane (DMDPM) and triethylamine (TEA) in homogeneous medium is explored. DMA and DMDPM participate only in photoinduced electron transfer (PET) with AY whereas TEA is found to be involved in both PET and charge-transfer complex formation. The novelty of the present work lies in the fact that all the three AY-amine systems exhibit magnetic field effect on PET reactions in homogeneous medium due to inter-radical hydrogen bond mediated by intervening water molecules, which sustain the geminate characteristics as well as the spin correlation of radical ion pairs, that are formed as primary intermediates through PET.
