Isothermal crystallization kinetics and morphology of biodegradable poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate)
Isothermal crystallization kinetics and morphology of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate) [P(3HB-co-4HB)] with different 4-hydroxybutyrate (4HB) molar fraction were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), and polarized optical microscopy (POM). The results show that the crystallization mechanism and crystal structure of P(3HB-co-4HB) copolymers are the similar as those of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB). While the equilibrium melting point and crystallization rate decrease with the increase of 4HB molar fraction. Banded spherulites are observed in neat PHB and P(3HB-co-4HB) copolymers, and morphology is influenced apparently by the crystallization temperature and 4HB unit.
