Charge-transfer excitation in collisions of slow H+ and H-3(+) ions with CO2 molecules under beam conditions
Charge-transfer reactions of the H+ and H-3(+) ions with CO2 were investigated in the (5-1000) eV laboratory energy range of the projectile. The observed luminescent charge exchange processes result in the formation of the electronically excited CO2+ (A, B) states. The relative chemiluminescence cross-sections for these reactions are measured. The cross-section for the reactions leading to the CO2+ (A + B) states varies slightly in the (100-1000) eV laboratory energy range and the absolute cross-section is estimated to be of the order of 10(-20) cm(2). In both cases a decrease of the excitation function was observed for energies up to similar to 200 eV, probably due to the formation of long-lived collision complexes. (C) 2011 Elsevier B. V.
