Product Design of Disperse Solids by Breaking Up Materials
Nearly all manufacturing processes in the chemical, food and pharmaceutical industry include steps for size reduction of substances. Disperse materials (e.g., solids, suspensions) and continua (e.g., liquids, melts) are crushed for setting the required particle size and size distribution and the particle form. The products are mainly targeted in the size range between about 500 nm and a few millimeters. Occasionally, other operations such as drying, cooling, coating or reacting, are performed during crushing. The physico-chemical and application properties are adjusted in the laboratory and in the pilot plants. Partially complex settings and coordinated steps in the production, define the product design.
