The proof of concept of a micro-sieve contactor was demonstrated in a lab scale module and the separation performance validated with stripping experiments. The principle was then scaled up by increasing the size of the sieves and by stacking microsieves in one module to increase the capacity for applications beyond lab scale. The potential and proof of concept of numbering-up by stacking several sieves and also connecting modules in series to increase the separation efficiency was experimentally determined and showed a flexible set-up with respect to capacity and efficiency.
