Life Cycle Assessment, a product-related analysis tool in the area of ecological sustainability, has boomed in the last decades. One of the reasons is the fact that an increased amount of background databases is available for this instrumen. In this contribution, the most comprehensive and most transparent such database - the database ecoinvent, developed in Switzerland - is presented in detail; and its applicability for the chemical industry is outlined.
