Orientation Behavior and Mechanical Properties of Poly(butylene 2,6-naphthalate)/Poly(ethylene glycol) Copolymer Filament under Uniaxial Elongation

Poly(butylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PBN)/poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) copolymers for a thermoplastic elastomer utilizing an aromatic polyester and a hydrophilic PEG were synthesized by condensation polymerization, and the copolymer filaments were then fabricated by using a melt spinning method. The copolymer filaments produced had different PEG contents and molecular weights. The effects of PEG content and molecular weight on the orientation behavior and mechanical properties of the copolymer filaments under uniaxial elongation were investigated. The orientation, elongation at the break, and instantaneous elastic recovery of the PBN/PEG copolymer filaments were found to be significantly improved compared with pure PBN, while their tensile strength decreased with increasing PEG content and molecular weight.
