Investigation of transient redox electrochemical MHD using numerical simulations
To advance numerical simulation capabilities of electrochemical magnetohydrodynamics (ECMHD), we employed potential step and potential sweep voltammetry in simulations of the ECMHD of a redox couple. Using time-varying boundary conditions based on the Butler-Volmer electrode kinetics model, we studied the interplay of Lorentz force, convection and redox species concentration distribution. Parametric studies of potential sweep rate, standard rate constant, solution viscosity, magnetic flux intensity, and redox species concentration were done to shed light on their influence on system behavior. The study establishes numerical simulation as a robust tool for electrochemical MHD studies, and for developing microfluidic devices based on this principle. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd.
