It is shown that wall effects may significantly alter heat flow through heterogeneous material. These effects can be accurately modelled using the concept of the apparent wall heat transfer coefficient alpha(w). A method for exact evaluation of alpha(w) is proposed and is used for testing of the ad hoc formulae available in literature.
