Numerical-Studies on Thermal-Convection in Cold Groundwater
Convective flow patterns in near-surface aquifers can be induced, if a critical temperature gradient with respect to the Rayleigh number is exceeded. In cold seasons the gradient is usually steeper, because the temperature at the watertable is lowered. The paper discusses the change of critical margin due to variable water properties, i.e. nonlinear changes in density and viscosity.
