For the inline monitoring of spray drying processes by measuring the mean droplet size and the droplet concentration an optical measurement device based on the statistical extinction method is developed. The sensor can be constructed lanceolate because only one laser beam is necessary to illuminate the spray. The optical components of the sensor can be protected against fouling by a rinse volume flow through adaptable sheaths.
