As far as chemical plants are concerned the trend to plants consisting of standard modules, which had been forecasted in the past, has not become true. Especially for large-scale plants, individual modification results in advantageous technological solutions and competitive advantages. These trends are also relevant for multipurpose-or other production plants. In case of specialties with small production volumes it is important to shorten the period of time between the development of the products and the start of the production in order to quickly have the product available and to minimize the risks. Flexible small-scale plants based on standardized modules or container modules can mark a first step toward shorter delays. This approach is the topic of different research projects within the EU.
