Characterization of Supramolecular Electrolytes for Highly Efficient Solid State Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells |

Oligomeric supramolecules containing multiple (double (2H-P), triple (3H-P), and quadruple (4H-P)) hydrogen bonding sites at both chain ends of the PEG oligomers were utilized to improve the energy conversion efficiency for solid state dye-sensitized solar cells. The improved efficiency was primarily due to the better interfacial contact by deeper penetration of the oligomeric supramolecules into the nanopores of the TiO2 layer and also to the increased ionic conductivity. The electron diffusion coefficient and lifetime through the TiO2 layer were measured by stepped-light induced modulated photocurrent and photovoltage method (SLIM-PCV). The diffusion coefficients of iodide inside the polymer electrolyte comprising multiple hydrogen bonds were also obtained using linear sweep voltammetry(LSV). The 2H-P and 3H-P electrolytes showed faster ionic diffusion and longer electron lifetime than the 4H-P one, resulting in higher energy conversion efficiency of ~4.5% at 1 sun condition. |
