Novel copolymers based on polyaspartamide containing histamine pendants (PHEA-HIS) was prepared from polysuccinimide, and the prepared water-soluble copolymer was then chemically cross-linked to provide a hydrogel having not only good gel strength, but reversible CO2-responsive swelling characteristics. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is nontoxic, inexpensive, abundant, and an eco-friendly chemical reagent. Due the presence of imidazole groups, the hydrogel can strongly nteract with CO2 and exhibit reversible volume transition in aqueous media. Also the same groups can provide sites for coordination bond with various metal-ions such as Pb2+, Cu2+, and Ni2+ in aqueous system. The responsive swelling behavior, metal-ion adsorption property, and morphology of this PHEA-HIS hydrogel are presented. Above biocompatible smart hydrogel has potential for a variety of environmental and biomedical applications including CO2 capture, CO2-responsive and switchable sensor, drug delivery, etc. |
