Nickel-coordinated bidendate α-diimine catalysts were synthesized, which demonstrate promising activity in ethylene polymerization. The ligands are prepared via the condensation of bulky ortho-substituted anilines bearing remote push-pull substitutuents with acenaphthenequinone, and the catalysts are prepared via coordination of these ligands to (1,2-dimethoxyethane)NiBr2 to form complexes having general formula [ZN=C(An)-C(An)=NZ]NiBr2 [Z = (4-NH2-3,5-C6H2R2)2CH(4-C6H4Y); An = Acenaphthenequinone; R = Me, iPr; Y = H, OCH3]. Additionally, novel structured ligands are synthesized via click chemistry between preceding ligands and vegetable oils, such as soybean and castor oils. The resulting catalysts are used for ethylene polymerizations in combination with ethylaluminium sesqichloride and methylaluminoxane. The structures of the ligands were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance and infrared spectroscopy. |
