Enhanced Permeation of Laminated Graphene Oxide Membranes for Nanofiltration via Surface Morphology Control of Support |

Porosity and roughness of polycarbonate (PC) support were precisely controlled by ion beam treatments, showing more porous and rougher surface by increasing ion beam treatment time. By using the controlled PC support, we revealed that morphology of PC support dramatically affects the interlayer structure of graphene oxide (GO) and its nanofiltration performance. Ordering of GO laminates became random as roughness of support turned rough, resulting in 3 times enhanced permeation but, hindering rejection for sub-nanometer molecules. Moreover, the impact by surface of support increased as following GO layer becoming thinner (20 nm). In contrast, thick GO membrane was relatively less influenced by support. This work implies importance of support morphology control to enhance performance of ultrathin GO membranes. |
