The Stability of Liquid Crystal-Alignment Layer Structure |

The relation between image sticking and anchoring strength in IPS (In-Plane Switching) type LCD has been investigated. The anchoring strength was measured using a method that was created first in this study. A series of photo-alignment layers were prepared varying the UV illumination time with up to hundreds times difference. They showed insignificant differences in anchoring strength, while they had considerably different degree of image sticking or anchoring stability. On the other hand, when we imposed electric, elastic, or thermal stress to the test cells, we found that the anchoring strength responded appreciably. Those observations suggest that the anchoring strength is more sensitive to the change of surface state than the degree of photo-alignment that is related closely to the image sticking phenomenon. |
