제목 Simple prevention method of microbial contamination applicable to a mass culture of Haematococcus pluvialis by pH adjustment
초록 Astaxanthin is mainly produced by Haematococcus pluvialis and well known for its superior antioxidant capability. However, the mass culture of H. pluvialisis regarded challenging worldwide because the cell is easily contaminated. Among many contaminants, a parasitic chytrid/blastoclad fungus, Paraphysoderma sedebokerensesis regarded as most detrimental which frequently makes the whole culture collapse within a few days. Despite several methods have been developed, these methods show drawbacks to control the entire infection and could only partially interupt the process. Regarding a feasible application to the industrial scale, a new prevention method was developed in this study with simple and least effort-demanding way. By only changing the pH of the medium to the acid range, H. pluvialis could successfully produce astaxanthin in the presence of P. sedebokerense. It shows 12~15% loss in the biomass compared to neutral pH (pH 7.5) production.
