제목 1 kW-Level Aqueous Organic Redox Flow Battery using Vanadium and Anthraquinone-2,7-disolfunic acid as Redox Couple
초록 A redox flow battery (RFB) has been studied as one of the promising energy storage systems due to its safety and long life-cycle. Especially, tunability and low costs of organic species make them favourable redox-active materials for RFBs. In this study, anthraquinone-2,7-disolfunic acid (2,7-AQDS) and vanadyl sulfate (VOSO4) were used for anolyte and catholyte, and a 1 kW-class aqueous organic RFB stack was demonstrated. In this system, manganese sulfate (MnSO4) was dissolved in the anolyte as an additive to control osmotic pressure and suppress permeation of vanadium cations. Especially, MnSO4 whose potential is lower than that of 2,7-AQDS remained electrochemically stable and improved redox kinetics of 2,7-AQDS, resulting in higher energy efficiency in battery tests. Band gaps and interaction energy were calculated based on density functional theory (DFT) to elucidate improved kinetics parameters. Lastly, 10-layered RFB with the active area of 1200 cm2 was demonstrated with capacity fade rate of 0.18% per cycle and exhibited the power of 1.15 kW at 160 mA·cm-2.
