Piezoelectric Properties of Uniaxially Drawn PLA Film |

Polylactic acid (PLA) is well known as an eco-friendly shear-piezoelectric polymer with excellent biodegradable and biocompatible properties. PLA exhibits unique piezoelectric behavior because of its genuine chiral molecular conformation in which the atoms exhibit separate electrical behavior in all directions around central carbon atom. We have now focused our attention towards piezoelectric property of uniaxially drawn PLA film as a substitute for commercial PVDF film. Piezoelectricity in PLA originate from its molecular helical structure aided by the transformation of 103 helical conformation to 31 helical conformation upon drawing PLA film. We investigated the piezoelectricity of uniaxially drawn PLA film at various draw ratios and cutting angles. Birefringence of PLA drawn film also measured at various draw ratios and correlated the relationship between birefringence and piezoelectricity of uniaxially drawn film.
