Biofuels have been considered as an attractive alternative to petroleum-based fuels because production and consumption of biodiesel could not only reduce carbon dioxide emissions but also contribute to mitigating various environmental problems. Especially, biofuels from microalgae are considered as one of most promising alternatives, but the production cost should be reduced to compete with petroleum-based fuels. For a selectively permeable membrane photobioreactors (SPM-PBRs) floating on the ocean, cultivation cost could be reduced by using nutrients dissolved in the seawater via diffusing through SPM while microalgae are retained inside. Biofouling which clogs and blocks the pores of SPMs should be prevented to prolong the lifespan of SPMs and decrease production cost. In this study, surfaces of SPMs, consist of polyethylene terephthalate, were alkylated with 4-hydroxyphenyl bromide (4-HPB) to inhibit biofouling. |
