In a selective solvent that dissolves only one of the blocks, diblock copolymers self-associate into micelles with soluble coronas and insoluble cores. These micelles can solubilize otherwise insoluble substances in the cores so that they can be suitable for colloidal stabilization, drug delivery, and so on. In this study, fluorophores, which are insoluble in toluene, were solubilized in a toluene solution of polystyrene-b-poly(4-vinylpyridine), PS-PVP, diblock copolymer micelles by selective incorporation of fluorescent dyes into the PVP cores. Since the micelles can be dispersed well in a polystyrene matrix without aggregation, fluorescent dyes can be incorporated effectively into a polymer matrix by the nanoscopic encapsulation. Such polymer-micelle composites can be coated onto LEDs to convert the emitting color. |
