Pt/γ-Al2O3 catalysts coated on a honeycomb-shaped metallic substrate with a γ-Al2O3 intermediate layer were fabricated using the wash-coating method. The intermediate layer was created on the metallic substrate by surface oxidation through pack cementation method. The monolithic Pt/γ-Al2O3 catalysts with the intermediate layer were produced for potential candidates as pre-turbocharger catalysts, which are exposed to severe engine vibrations and high flow rates of exhaust gas. Adhesion strength tests were carried out using the monolithic Pt/γ-Al2O3 catalysts with and without the intermediate layer. The catalysts with a γ-Al2O3 intermediate layer showed much stronger adhesion. Furthermore, CO/C3H6 simultaneous oxidations were performed using the monolithic Pt/γ-Al2O3 catalysts after adhesion tests. The catalysts without an intermediate layer showed severe activity degradation, whereas catalytic performance was well maintained for the catalysts with an intermediate layer. Thus, the formation of a γ-Al2O3 intermediate layer on metallic substrate can significantly enhance the mechanical stability of monolithic catalysts. |
