Hybrid materials are well-blended mixtures of different materials that may give the improved properties. We have studied hybrid thin films of small molecules and polymers to control many film properties including wetting, topology and chemical functionalities. Organic compounds having surface-reactive end groups form self-assembled monolayers(SAMs). This surface-bound end group is often called a “head-group” and the other side of the molecule is called an “end-group” because it will present a new surface after forming a monolayer. Therefore, SAMs form organic interfaces with the properties largely controlled by the end groups of the molecules comprising of the film. In contrast, polyelectrolyte multilayers(PEMs), which are thin films of polymer blend, are determined their properties by mainly the molecular architecture of the film. By controlling the surface density of the SAM and PEM, we have created various SAM/PEM hybrid films and studied their surface properties. |
