Ex-solved Rh Nanoparticles from Nano-domain CeO2 for Hydrogen Production via Propane Steam Reforming |

In a field of heterogeneous catalysts, it is important to maintain strong interaction between metals and host oxides. Recently, the ex-solution phenomenon has received attention as an effective technique to prepare 'strongly anchored' metals on host oxides such that anchoring effect often results in enhanced durability. Perovskite materials have been mainly used as host oxides for ex-solution, but their small surface areas have limited their practical use. Here, co-precipitation method was used to prepare nanodomain Rh-doped ceria solid solution, and Rh was ex-solved by simple reducing process, which resulted in catalysts with high surface area of 70.7 m2/g. The exolution of Rh nanoparticles were directly observed by in situ TEM. The propane steam reforming(PSR) process was carried out at 700 °C for 65 h, and the ex-solved Rh catalysts showed neither coarsening of surface metals nor degradation in performance due to its high resistance against sintering and coke formation. Our work shows that ex-solution from a ceria-based nanodomain can be a good way to prepare catalysts with a large surface area and excellent durability for hydrogen production via PSR reaction. |
