A new polymer, polybenzimdazole with benzimidazole pendants, was synthesized in our laboratory, in order to study the relationship between its chemical structure and proton conductivity, which may be useful in designing desirable PBI derivatives for polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEMFC) applications. Membranes were prepared by solution casting, and subsequently immersed in a phosphoric acid solution to obtain the corresponding phosphoric acid-doped PBI membranes. The resulting membranes were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, TGA, DSC, and proton conductivity at nearly anhydrous conditions (at 90℃ to 120℃), and compared with the conventional PBI membranes. The experimental results will be presented in detail. |
