Tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol is widely used as a green benign solvent which is less toxic, degradable, and more stable than other furan compounds. Silica has less activity in hydrogenation than other supports such as carbon and TiO2. Recently, wrinkled silica has been attracted as a catalyst support, enabling to improve mass transfer. Herein, we investigated the synthesis of wrinkled silica by varying the surfactant to silica precursor ratio and Pd/wrinkled silica catalysts were prepared by chemical reduction method. The increased amount of surfactant provided smaller particle size and larger surface area of silica, leading to higher Pd dispersion. To demonstrate the enhanced catalytic activity, the catalytic activity was evaluated via hydrogenation of furfural over Pd/SiO2 sphere and Pd/wrinkled silica. Pd/wrinkled silica showed the higher conversion and selectivity than Pd/SiO2, resulting from the high mass transfer rate due to its large surface area and pore. |
